Chapter 13

Paige

Each inhale felt like I was getting less and less oxygen. My throat felt raw and sore, but what hurt more was how sexy Hephaestus had gone from kissing me and bringing me close to a climax without sex to acting like I had a contagious disease. Worse, I didn't know what I did or didn't do to cause him to do this.

Why bring me here to a volcano? I mean I knew I wasn't ready for dealing with this kind of massive power. The forest with its ash-covered ground had been perfect. And he'd been so sweet showing me the woodpecker and the little beetles. Now he acted like he wanted to throw me into the volcano as a sacrifice.

A dry laugh bubbled out of my throat and Hephaestus glanced back at me.

"Sorry, was imagining you tossing me there to appease the volcano god, like in the stories I've read."

He arched an eyebrow and the ghost of a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. "What kind of books are you reading?"

Before I could answer, he continued, "Cause I could think of hotter things to do to a heroine than a lava bath."

My flush heated my entire body that had nothing to do with the proximity of the volcano. "I may need a super cold shower whenever we're done here." I had tried to change the subject as he seemed uncomfortable about our kissing in the forest even though I had no idea why. And it wasn't until the words were out of my mouth that I realized my mistake of a cold shower to freeze out any lustful thoughts.

"Not until we do some training." He looked away from me as if oblivious to what I had said and the sexual meaning behind it. "Now close your eyes, feel the heat pooling deep inside the volcano. How it's fluid. Liquid, molten rock. How it will soon overflow across this island and cover everything."

"Should we be standing so close to it then? I mean, couldn't we start with something smaller like a lava lamp?" I had no intention of getting up close and personal with real, live lava. I mean, sure, I was with the god of fire, but I already felt like I was being roasted.

"Lava lamp?" He shook his head. "That's not real lava."

I crossed my arms. "Then why do they call it that?"

"Marketing." He smirked. "It's mostly Paraffin wax and a poor substitute for the real thing. Now stop stalling and concentrate."

"Fine." I closed my eyes and tried to ignore how I was being slowly cooked alive. After a few seconds, I frowned. How was I supposed to pinpoint the lava inside the volcano when it was scorching hot all around me? Seriously, this was like asking a gnat inside an oven to find the source of the heat. Not to mention how my body seemed to instinctively know that Hephaestus was three feet away from me. How soft and warm his lips felt pressed to mine.
